Who We Are

Established in 1994, the Philippine United Student Organization (PUSO) is a Filipino cultural-interest organization at Stony Brook University.

We aim to fulfill our mission statement by hosting events such as:

  • Ate/Kuya/Lodi Mentoring Program through which we connect older brothers (kuya), sisters (ate), and/or siblings (lodi) to the younger classmen.
  • Kamayan Night, at which we celebrate the end of the AKL Program, and we introduce traditional Filipino foods, to be eaten in the traditional “Kamayan” style.
  • Simbang Gabi, which is an annual celebration held in the Philippines in anticipation for Christmas. Traditionally, this entails nine days of Masses. Here at Stony Brook, we work with the Campus Ministry to bring those of faith, as well as PUSO, to enjoy a Mass after which they can experience authentic Filipino foods.
  • SAYAW, which is our annual dance competition that brings teams from across the East Coast. We aim to invite headliners that align with our mission statement. Previous headliners include The Filipino School of NY and NJ, Kinding Sindaw, Iman Brooks, Austin Edwards, and many more.
  • PUSOfest, which is a showcase of our general body members and a celebration of the year's accomplishments.

Apart from the events and programs we host, we also maintain three dance teams: PUSO Cultural, PUSO Ballroom, and PUSO Modern.
